To Madrid, With Love

Dear Madrid,

I just wanted to thank you for your love and support. You opened your doors to me and welcomed me with open arms. You treated me as one of your own family and made me feel at home from the moment I arrived. I was excited and anxious to share with you the news about what I’ve been doing back home in New York City. You gave me your full attention on that electric night of Sunday, March 23rd.

With sweat streaming from my body and emotions flowing through my veins, I poured my heart out to you from the stage above. In return you stood tall, giving me love and adulations, letting me know that you felt what I felt and heard what I said. I will not forget that night that night which forged so many great memories. With your support I feel encouraged to continue to walk down the path which I have been following.

Love,
ABAKUA

p.s.. I would like to thank Frankie Martinez, Johnny Matos, Nelson Barreto and all of my amazingly talented dancers. You make me who I am today…

p.p.s pictures will be posted in our gallery soon

ABAKÚA Afro-Latin Dance Company becomes Official

As of March 20th, 2008, the ABAKUA Afro-Latin Dance Company has officially become registered Non-Profit organization in the eyes of New York State.

This is a great milestone in our company's journey towards becoming one of the world’s first professional, theatre-based Afro-Latin Dance companies.

ABAKUA has a vision that with the development of theatrical repertoire, we can reach a broader audience and gain the widespread appreciation of Afro-Latin Dance. Making Afro-Latin dance a viable career option for aspiring dancers would reflect the importance and influence of Latin heritage in the US.

Our next goal will be attaining Federal Non-Profit status and exemption. Achieving this will yield us the full benefits of becoming a non-profit and support our mission to enrich out community. Like most things though, this comes with a pretty big price tag for us.

If you would like to help us reach this goal, please visit our website at www.abakuadancers.com to see how you can help or make a donation.
