ABAKÚA
Warms-Up with "Small" Audience
ABAKÚA
will be returning to Madrid, Spain on March 21st to perform as one of
the featured dance companies in the 6th Annual Salsa Simposium. This
show, a full 2 hours, will be the largest international showcase the
company has presented to date. To add even more pressure, we plan to
debut a new piece, Island Fever, choreographed by Frankie Martinez.
Fortunately, due to some maneuvering by ABAKÚA's own Aisha Koswara,
the dance company had the chance to do a dress rehearsal in a beautiful
auditorium at P.S 137 in Lower Manhattan. Our gracious hosts provided
not only the space that the company needed to test run its new material
but it provided some of the toughest patrons of dance theater in the
world: elementary school kids! As might be expected, some moves earned
snickers while others (like cartwheels) earned "oohs" and
"aaahs". By the end, the dance company had won the kids over,
inspiring some to dance in the aisles while others came to the stage
to introduce themselves.
Having passed this challenge, ABAKÚA is ready to pack its bags
to earn more "oohs" and "aahs" from a slightly older
and equally fun loving audience in Spain.

Manny's
Performance Project Reboots in April
Opportunity
is knocking...again!
Beginning
April 5th, Manny from the ABAKÚA
Afro-Latin Dance Company will be offering a new 12 week salsa performance
program.
If you have ever wanted to take what you've learned in class to the
stage, now is your chance!
This class is designed to teach students who have aspirations of working
with a Latin dance company or those who simply want to train and show
their talents on stage, the fundamentals of performance. This program
requires that you have been taking ABAKÚA Level 2 classes. There
will be at least one public performance by the group to feature the
work.
For
those who missed the first performance class, they worked 12 exciting
weeks and wowed everyone (including their teacher) with their performance.
Performing is a fun and memorable way to celebrate your dance training
and share the experience with friends.
For more information on this program, please call You Should Be Dancing
at at 212-244-0011 or visit www.youshouldbedancing.net.
Due to limited slots (5 guys/5 girls) there may be an audition
held one week prior to class. Sign-up early as slots will fill quickly.
If you would like to take a glimpse of the previous performance class,
check out www.mambonyc.com.
